Baby Chicks

Now that spring is almost here, we have begun carring baby chicks again. Just arrived Feb 16, we have 25 Plymoth Barred Rocks and 25 Rhode Island Reds. All are supposed to be little girls, but they can't ever be 100% sure. Check with your HOA to see if you can have a couple back yard gals of your own.

Gaddy's A great place to pick up chicks.

Fertilizing

Fertilizing.
Trees and shrubs should be fertilized in early spring, which would be the last part of February thru March. We carry quality granular blends for regular trees and shrubs as well as for fruiting or flowering trees.
Lawns won't need fertilizing until about April 1, a week or two before or after won't matter much, but I like to wait until April 1 anyway. We have organic options including my favorite, Ladybug 8-2-4, which covers 4170 sqft and is 28.99. The special blend "Brown Bag" that we have specially made for our area, has the right combo of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as well as a complete micro nutrient package to keep your yard greener, longer. Coverage is 6-8,000 sqft and is 19.99.

Existing Weeds

Kill the weeds you already have before they have a chance to drop any more seeds for next year. There are grassy weeds and then there are "broadleaf" weeds, which can best be described as not looking like grass. The main ones to worry about would be the broadleaf ones, as that is the ones you can actually kill without harming your base(established bermuda or st augustine) grass. For large areas we have Fertilome Weed Free Zone, or for smaller areas 8,000sqft coverage would be Wipe Out from Green Light..  Weed killers work better when the weed you are trying to kill is vigorously growing. The best time to spray is when you have leaf surface (NOT  just mowed, or about to mow), warmer, dryer and maybe even breezier(except while spraying). Clouds, cold and rain slow down the killing action of these chemicals and can allow the weed to pass the chemical from its system before it actually dies. As we warm up in the spring the chemicals will work better, but the weeds will be much larger choking the grasses below them, and will drop more seeds for you to fight next year. The weeds you are fighting now came up in October or November, so you would use the pre-emergents in Sept to Oct to prevent them next year. Organic options are limited, mainly manually pulling is the most effective, just gotta get the roots. Vinegar can be used to spot treat, but it needs to be at least 10% to 20% strength, so the stuff you buy at HEB won't work as it is only 5%. We do carry horticultural vinegar, and Weed Poppers. Too early to fertilize, wait for now.

More later,
